It’s the annual question in our house – what Christmassy things shall we do with the children in the run-up to the big day, and are we too late to book them?!

Christmas-time with children is just magical, and paying a visit to see Father Christmas is part and parcel of the preparations. Whether you’re traditional and do the same thing every year, or like to change it up and try something new, you want to make sure it’s going to be great-quality, fun and value for money.

So without further ado, read on to find my recommendations for the best Christmas experiences in Hertfordshire and Essex.

Where can I take my children to see Father Christmas in Hertfordshire and Essex?

Audley End Miniature Railway

This has become something of a tradition for us since my eldest was tiny, and over the years it’s been getting better and better. Although the magical train ride and the performance from Santa and his elves is the main event, there’s loads to do as part of the experience, from making reindeer food or strolling through the illuminated woodland walk, to watching a performance in the tipi tent.

This does tend to book out early, but if you’re flexible with your day and time you should still find tickets into November and December.

Audley End Miniature Railway, Saffron Walden, Essex

Marsh Farm

Another full experience here which I’ve heard great things about. Journey through the Elf Academy to learn some magical Christmas spells, on to the Snow Show with Mother Christmas (and decorate a gingerbread person). You then get to meet the big man himself, choose and make your own furry friend in the Teddy Bear Market, then visit the Elf Emporium to exchange your elf money for a gift!

You’re then free to enjoy the rest of what the farm has to offer – festive rides, meeting the animals, ice skating and more!

Marsh Farm Animal Adventure Park, South Woodham Ferrers, Essex

Hertfordshire Zoo

This one is great as it’s all included in the price of your day ticket to the zoo. Every weekend there will be a magical Christmas Grotto, where your children have the chance to meet Father Christmas himself, and receive a small gift. The whole zoo will be getting in the Christmas spirit, with an elf adventure trail, twinkling Christmas lights and visits from the Grinch! The zookeepers have planned special seasonal talks and the animals will have Christmas-themed enrichment toys!

Dine with Santa at Knebworth House

Fancy something a little more grown up? Here you can enjoy a fantastic meal at Knebworth Barns complete with a visit from Santa! The experience includes an arrival grazing platter, a two course meal, tea, coffee and mince pies. Prices start from £28 per child.

Brunch / Afternoon Tea with Santa at Down Hall

Another option if you’re looking to treat yourself as well as your little ones. This beautiful hotel is offering two options – either brunch or a festive afternoon tea – both with a visit from Father Christmas and a special gift. The menus on both of these sounds delicious! This is bookable during weekends in December and also Monday 23rd December.

Info for the brunch can be found here, and for the afternoon tea here.

Down Hall, Hatfield Heath, Essex

Santa’s Storyboats at Frogmore Paper Mill

Something a little different here. Aimed at children aged 4-8 who love stories, you’ll climb aboard the boat and journey along the River Gade, reading Christmas-themed stories and feeding any water birds if you can. There’ll be a very special visitor on board who’ll be giving out a small goody bag to each child. I love the idea of this as it’s so different! There’s only 2 slots, and sessions sell out fast – so be quick! Tickets go on sale on Monday 2nd December.

Amazing Christmas Light Trails in Hertfordshire and Essex (and the surrounding areas)

There’s something magical about seeing somewhere all lit up with twinkling lights at Christmas. Here’s my pick of the best Christmas Light Trails in Hertfordshire, Essex and the surrounding areas.

Colchester Zoo Enchanted Trail of Light

Experience a whole host of illuminations along a designated route, featuring an immersive blue ice tunnel, magical rainbow light bridge and life-sized animal illuminations. Plus, you can control the magic with special interactive light zones. You can also enjoy a ride on the festive road train during the trail. Please note, this is an exclusive evening event which is separate to the zoo (the zoo will be closed).

Enlightened at Hylands Estate

Enlightened trails promise magic for the whole family. This is a night-time outdoor attraction that illuminates a dedicated trail of light around the grounds of the estate. On the trail there are numerous static and interactive light up attractions with an enchanting soundscape.

Epping Ongar Lights Express – Epping Ongar Railway

A light trail on and in a steam train! Each passenger receives their own LED wristband which is synchronised to the music while you journey from Ongar to Epping and back. (Note there is no appearance from Father Christmas on this train). I think this would be fab for those with slightly older children who maybe no longer ‘believe’ (sob!).

Ashridge House Illuminated

Said to be the largest light trail in Hertfordshire! Set within the sprawling, historic grounds of Ashridge House, the event transforms the estate’s woodlands and gardens with dazzling lights and mesmerising installations. They even have dog-friendly nights!

Cambridge Botanic Lights

Held at the Botanic Gardens in Cambridge, this offers spectacular displays and artistic installations. If you’ve never visited the gardens before, you’ll be in for a treat. The lights highlight some of the garden’s features such as the Fountain, Lake and Glasshouse.

The Café offers some lovely food (in my experience) so make sure you leave room for a treat or two!

So whether you’re looking to chat to the big man, or just want to get in the festive spirit with a host of twinkling lights, I hope this has given you some inspiration of where to go!
