So you’re pregnant – congratulations! Whether it’s your first time being a parent or you’re an old hat at it, this is always an exciting time.
As you’re reading this, I’m guessing you’ve decided to find out whether you’re having a boy or girl, and you’re thinking of having a gender reveal for your friends and family. Lots of people seem to be in strong camps about this – with my two I was adamant that I wouldn’t find out. Quite a few friends had a surprise for their first but found out for the second. To be more organised was their reasoning – although I felt it wouldn’t make a difference to what I needed to sort out either way. Maybe I’m just not very organised!
When do I do a gender reveal?
Here in the UK we are usually given the option of finding out our baby’s gender at the 20 week scan. So unless, you opt for a private scan and find out earlier, this is the earliest you’ll be able to tell people the gender of your baby. Of course, people can have lots of fun guessing in the mean time!
What do you typically do at a gender reveal?
Once you’ve found out what you’re having, it can be exciting to think of a fun way of telling your family and friends. A gender reveal has become more popular here recently, while I think it’s been a ‘thing’ in the US for some time. Usually a bit of an excuse for a mini party or get-together, there are some great ways of making it fun for all involved. You can make of it what you want to – go all out and have a party or just invite your immediate family over for a more low-key affair. I’ve even seen some people do it just the two of them and have family and friends on a Zoom to witness the action!
Unique ways of doing a gender reveal for your family
I’ve rounded up a selection of different gender reveal options here. Some are more crazy or more involved than others! Have a look through and see if any inspire you!
Using balloons for your gender reveal
This is one of the most popular options for a gender reveal party and there are loads of different ideas of how to use them.

A very simple way is to use a large neutral (often black) helium balloon with pink or blue confetti inside, and be ready to pop to reveal the gender. This is also lovely if there is a sibling-to-be to help (although I’ve seen lots of disaster videos of these so be on your guard!). Ginger Ray
Or you could have some helium balloons of the chosen colour inside a large box and lift the lid to let the balloons float out. Both are relatively cheap options if you don’t want to spend too much.

Another option is to create a board with a number of neutral balloons attached to it. One balloon has confetti or paint inside, and guests (or the parents) take it in turn to throw darts at the balloons in an effort to pop them and reveal the baby’s gender. [Image: A Crafted Passion]
Using cake and other food for your gender reveal

Again, using cake is one of the most popular ways to reveal the gender of your baby. The cake is usually iced in a neutral colour or in both pink and blue, with the gender revealed as the cake is cut. [Image: Lola’s Cupcakes]
Or you could even have cupcakes with a blob of either pink or blue hidden in the middle – the gender is revealed as your guests chomp into the cake!

For something a bit different, how about getting some custom made fortune cookies with messages inside revealing your baby’s gender? This would be such a great idea if you were doing your reveal around the time of the Lunar New Year – or maybe even if your and your partner’s favourite meal is Chinese! Find these at Yumbles
Other fun ideas for your gender reveal
Pinatas

This is a great one if you want to get children involved in the excitement! Fill a pinata with pink or blue sweets or trinkets – with the tension building as the pinata gets closer and closer to being broken open! Find these at Ginger Ray
Confetti cannons or colourful smoke bombs

Another popular and cheap way of doing a gender reveal – get your family and friends to do a countdown and pop the cannons to reveal the surprise! Ginger Ray
Silly string

A really fun way to reveal the gender of your baby – and great if you’ve got kids at the party too! Make sure the colour of the cans is obscured and get your guests involved in squirting! Probably best to warn your guests beforehand so they don’t wear their Sunday best. [Image: Etsy]
Low-key ways of revealing the gender of your baby
Scratch cards

Perfect for a more low-key reveal, these would be great if you were simply telling your nearest and dearest over a meal or something similar, as it’s a mess free option. Grab some cards from Etsy and on the count of three, let your guests scratch away to reveal the surprise. [Image: Etsy]
Bubbles

Another great one if you have young children at the party is to use coloured bubbles to reveal the gender of your baby. Fill the bubble solution with dye or colouring, turn on the bubble machine and let the bubbles float around your party. I wonder how long it would be until one of your guests notices!
