I’m very excited to share with you this gorgeous outdoor newborn photoshoot in Saffron Walden, Essex.

I first met Ellie when I visited her beautiful flower farm, Hawksbury Hunt Flowers, in Clavering, just outside of Saffron Walden in Essex, for a tulip-picking session.

Earlier in the year I had seen a post pop up on my Instagram account, advertising ‘pick-your-own tulips’. As Mother’s Day was coming up, I thought this would be the perfect gift for my mum. We had a lovely time choosing our flowers and followed it with lunch at the nearby pub The Cricketers, famed for being formerly owned by Jamie Oliver’s parents and where he learned his trade. It gets trickier every year to think of gifts for my mum, so an experience with flowers followed by food ticked all the boxes!

At the time, Ellie was pregnant, and shortly after our visit got in touch with me to enquire about a newborn photoshoot.

Choosing the Newborn Photoshoot Location in Saffron Walden

During our pre-session call, Ellie told me about how special the farm was to her. She had grown up there as a child, moved away for a while, but now was back there, working and living on site and had plans to build a brand new home for her growing family.

And this right here is one of the main reasons that I love in-home photography so much. Studio photography, however nice, could be anywhere. But an in-home session? Now that goes deep! You’re not only capturing memories of the special time when you’ve just welcomed a new love into your life, but you’re doing it somewhere that means the most to you. Granted we don’t all have as many emotional connections to the place we’re living as Ellie, but it’s still the first place you brought your baby home to. It’s where you’re making memories of them growing up—their first meal, their first steps, even how their first room was decorated. It’s important, and it’s so special to be able to look back on.

But back to the shoot…

Ellie explained that there wasn’t much space or light in the small house they were temporarily living in until their build was completed. However, she would love to have the session outside in the flower fields, as they meant so much to her. Now, that was music to my ears—a beautiful flower farm for an outdoor photoshoot in Essex!

The Day of the Newborn Photoshoot

The day of the session was a beautiful sunny day, which most people think is perfect for a photoshoot. But blazing sunshine can cause harsh shadows on the face, so we did our best to stick to the more shady areas.

As is often the case with older siblings, big brother took a while to warm up, but once he did, we captured some lovely family and sibling shots. And just look how radiant Ellie is with her new baby boy!

We even managed to persuade the family’s two dogs to get in the frame! If you have pets I always encourage you to include them in the photoshoot – they are part of the family after all! This is another great benefit of an in-home photoshoot, that you can include EVERYONE in the photos.

I hope you enjoyed reading the story of this gorgeous outdoor newborn shoot in Saffron Walden. I know not everyone has their own flower farm to offer as a backdrop, but one of the things I love about in-home shoots is that no two are the same.
